MENTHON – Redefining the coordination of rescue operations

In perfect mountain weather, a team from HAT.tec recently had the opportunity to take part in an exercise organized by the Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service and the Alpine Police Task Force. The search for two missing hikers was simulated for the #MENTHON research project, in which the Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service Division Penzberg, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (Die Seenotretter – DGzRS), AID Innovation GmbH, the Institute of Flight Systems at the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich and HAT.tec GmbH are involved. The aim of #MENTHON is to fundamentally improve the coordination of such rescue missions through the greater integration of manned and unmanned aircraft.

After a briefing and introduction of the search teams to the search area, the mountain rescuers, two dog teams, a drone team and an ultralight aircraft from AID set off to search the area. At the operations center, the position details and information provided were received by radio and transferred to a digital situation map. The overall picture generated helps with further strategic decision-making in order to provide the rescue teams with targeted information for their further actions.

Through MENTHON, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and coordinated by VDI Technologiezentrum GmbH, a system for better joint integration and coordination of aircraft with the help of artificial intelligence (#AI) is being designed for rescue operations.

The aim is the highly automated planning and coordination of reconnaissance flights of manned and unmanned systems during rescue operations, as well as the automatic evaluation of sensor data in order to transmit the information obtained directly to the control center and emergency services on site. In our view, human autonomy teaming and the associated human-machine integration are key components of this!

We look forward to further developments by the team around Dr.-Ing. Franziska Funk and project partners.
